About 5 miles due east of our flat lies the Dundee suburb of Broughty Ferry, a delightful little town with a lot of history behind it! In the 1800's, the small council area became the hot spot for affluent jute barons to build their mansions which led to Broughty Ferry being known as the "richest square mile in Europe".

The town boasts miles of sandy beaches, lovely views of the river Tay, and it's very own castle on the water! We can actually see the castle on a clear day from our balcony!

"In 1495 Broughty Castle was built and remained in use as a major defensive structure until 1932, playing a role in the Anglo-Scottish Wars and the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. The castle stands on a shallow tip projecting into the Firth, alongside two beaches, one of sand, the other of pebbles."

We just came for a late night stroll on the beach and I could not believe how many people were swimming and having fun in the water at 8PM! It was easily 65 outside and the river couldn't have been more than 60. Crazy people! I had to laugh, we were surrounded by people lounging around in just bathing suits and us Americans we're bundled up tight! Of course the only couple I saw that were dressed appropriately for the cold were also American! Go figure.

We took a walk down the beach and got to the castle. It's surprisingly open for a historic place. We were able to walk in and around the grounds and since it was late, no one else was really around to bother us.

It ended up getting dark so we left but we will definitely be back to check out the castle and sights in the day time!
