Even More and More Castles of Scotland!

Part 5! Is this getting old yet?

Doune Castle was originally built in the 1200's but after being damaged in the Scottish Wars of Independence, it was rebuilt in the 1300's by the Duke of Albany, son of Robert II, King of Scots.

Doune has quite the thespian history! The castle was used as a location for the 1952 film Ivanhoe, as a set for Winterfell in the first season of Game of Thrones, and as the fictional "Castle Leoch" in Outlander. The comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail was also filmed on location in Scotland in 1974.

The magnificent ruins of Dunskey Castle are picturesquely perched on a rocky hillside jutting out into the Irish Sea. On a clear day, you can actually see Ireland, being only 12 miles away!

The massive towerhouse was built in the mid-16th century for the Adairs of Kinhilt and the long wing to the north was added in the 1620's. By 1700 the whole building was in ruin. Allegedly, there is no access to the castle interior but the gate was open so we just walked right in! It was a location for the 1951 film Kidnapped, of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, Double X: The Name of the Game, as well as for the 1952 film Hunted.

Greenan Castle is a 16th-century ruined tower house South Ayrshire, Scotland looking out over the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Arran. We arrived just at sunset and had stunning views of the first and the island!

Situated at the top of a sea cliff, it was originally a promontory fort converted into a motte-and-bailey in the 12th century. In the 15th century a tower house was built by the Lords of the Isles, which later passed into the hands of the Kennedy family, who also owned Dalquharran Castle.

Dunure Castle is also located in South Ayrshire close to the village of Dunure. Today the castle stands in ruins on a rocky promontory on the Carrick coast, overlooking the harbor of Dunure.

Built in the 13th century by Clan Kennedy, it was in use from the 13th to 17th centuries. There are also said to be secret Ley tunnels which connect Dunure Castle to Greenan Castle further north. It was one of the first filming locations used for Outlander season 3. According to my friend Madelyn who loves the show, the entire village was augmented and fabricated as a film set.
